Spiritual Warfare
The issue of spiritual warfare and entryways.
In the Christian spiritual context, the term "entrance gates of evil" (often referred to as open doors or grounds for the enemy's influence) refers to specific areas of human life. Internal states, attitudes and actions through which a person – consciously or unconsciously – creates an opening for the influence, impact and attacks of spiritual darkness.
Christian anthropology and theology of spiritual life are based on the premise that humans are created as a unity of body, soul, and spirit, and are constantly exposed to a spiritual battle between good (God's grace) and evil (the influence of fallen angels — evil spirits).
Although a baptized person belongs to God, free will allows them to make decisions that can weaken this protection and create cracks in their spiritual defense.
I. The three main gates of entry of evil into human life.
Theologians and priests dedicated to liberation and spiritual guidance traditionally identify three main categories through which a demon can gain access to a person:
1. Sin (especially mortal sin).
Sin is a fundamental rejection of God's love and a violation of His order.
Impact on the soul: Light sins weaken the sensitivity of the conscience, while mortal sins cause spiritual death — completely separating the soul from sanctifying grace. In a state of mortal sin, a person loses the divine protection that comes with living in grace, making them much more vulnerable to external temptations and influences of evil.
● Deliberate persistence:
The key factor is not only the initial fall, but also the voluntary persistence in immorality or in grave sins without attempting to make amends and repent. This hardening of the heart creates a long-term space for destructive behavior and loss of internal freedom.
2. Internal wounds and unforgiveness.
Emotional and psychological wounds from the past that have not been healed pose a great risk to spiritual life.
● Zatrpknutost a hnev: When a person experiences deep rejection, betrayal, injustice, or trauma and does not forgive, they become consumed by anger and bitterness.
The spiritual dimension of unforgiveness: In the Christian understanding, unforgiveness is a kind of spiritual "bondage." A person who does not forgive remains mentally and emotionally tied to their offender. These open wounds become a breeding ground for depression, anxiety, self-pity, and spiritual weakness, which the devil actively uses to deepen division and despair.
3. Occultism and esotericism.
Any dabbling in occult practices represents direct contact with a spiritual reality outside of God, which the Bible and the Church firmly reject.
Forms of contact: Horoscopes (regarded as determining one’s fate), fortune-telling using cards (Tarot, playing cards), consulting clairvoyants, spiritualism, summoning spirits, the use of amulets and talismans, Reiki, New Age alternative healing practices that work with unknown cosmic energies, or the conscious dedication of oneself to other powers.
● Consequences: These practices act as a "welcome mat" for dark forces. Even though they appear harmless or healing on the outside, they subject the person to foreign power, which often results in long-term psychological problems, fear, nightmares, and internal unrest.
II. Secondary areas of influence: Senses and mind.
In addition to the three main gates, there are everyday channels through which evil infiltrates the human body:
- Unattended eyes and ears: The human mind is shaped by what it consumes. Modern people are exposed to a vast amount of visual and auditory content (violence, pornography, cynicism, occult culture in the media).
The destruction of the mind:
PROTECTION MEASURES:
1. Sacramental life: regular confession and Eucharist.
2. Healing through forgiveness and letting go of resentment.
3. Spiritual Prayer | Renouncing Evil and Worldly Ties
1. Sacramental life.
Regular Confession (Sacrament of Reconciliation): It is the most powerful weapon against evil. In confession, a person not only confesses their sins, but also receives God's forgiveness, which closes the door to sin and restores sanctifying grace.
Eucharistia (sväté prijímanie): Receiving Jesus Christ is the pinnacle of spiritual life.
The Eucharist acts as spiritual nourishment and a shield, strengthening the soul and protecting it from attacks of darkness.
2. Forgiveness as a healing process.
Forgiveness is not merely an emotional outburst, but a conscious decision of the will. It means relinquishing the right to retaliation, surrendering bitterness, and entrusting the entire matter to God. This decision breaks the power of unforgiveness and heals old emotional wounds from the past.
3. Modlitba zrieknutia sa a duchovný boj.
An effective defense is active prayer, in which a person names specific areas where they have sinned or had contact with occultism, and consciously renounces them in the name of Jesus Christ. This way, he closes the door to any temptation and renews his commitment to God.
